當農作物和食物過剩時，許多蝗蟲會大量進食和繁殖。同一地區會同時產下大量幼蟲，從而引發蝗蟲災害。對於某些物種，如果幼蟲彼此保持距離，它們將長成蚱蜢。但是，當多隻蚱蜢靠近時，其他蚱蜢的氣味和視覺會使它們變成蝗蟲。

When there is a surplus of crops and food, many grasshoppers can feed and breed. Lots of nymphs are born at the same time in the same area, creating a destructive grasshopper outbreak. For some species, if the nymphs stay away from each other, they will grow up into grasshoppers. But when multiple grasshoppers are close together, the smell and sight of other grasshoppers will change them into locusts.
